Stained Glass

Antique and collectible stained glass is presented in this section of AmaryllisAntiques. Here you will find a wonderful array of color and light. Information about the different Stained Glass Styles and a Restoration Guide are offered below as your starting point.

Reframing Service is available on some windows. Zinc borders or wood frames - $30 to $60.

Vintage stained glass window panels add another dimension of beauty and elegance to any décor. By filtering light through beautiful designs, stained glass can color your perceptions as well as the light.

Stained glass pieces can be used in many ways:

  • to create or change a room's ambiance
  • add or change color
  • hiding of undesirable views through ordinary windows
  • provide privacy while retaining exterior light
  • fracturing of light through the beveled prisms of some windows
  • enhancement of existing light sources

Most of the stained glass windows at AmaryllisAntiques have come from old homes in American East Coast towns and cities. These windows have been saved from house demolition. We also occasionally carry European imports as well as modest sized church windows when available.

All of our stained glass is in good repair unless otherwise noted. Old frames, usually painted, have been retained whenever possible. Note:  When we indicate "old frame" in the descriptions, the frame is most often 2" wide, therefore the actual glass measurement would be 4" less both in length and width.  Occasionally new framing has been required. (See Restoration Guide for more information on restoration.)

Vintage stained glass can be appreciated for its decorative design work, its unique way of texturing or tinting the light, and the subtle color blends within the glass itself, as well as the juxtaposition of various colors joined by the leading process. Occasional hand-painted glass pieces add further interest.

Stained Glass Styles

The stained glass windows we offer are arranged in the following categories:

Transoms are horizontal panels that are used above doorways or wall openings. Transoms can be left open to allow air flow through a room without leaving a door open. 990915-003a.jpg (31468 bytes)

Sidelights are vertical panels usually framing doorways. They are used to allow light to enter around a door. When the pattern allows it, they may also used in a horizontal position.
Church windows generally have a religious theme. These windows frequently suggest the architecture of the building from which they came.
Various window panels come in all sizes and shapes:  square, rectangular, gothic or gradual arches, or half round domes.

Restoration Guide
for Glass and Framing

Vintage stained glass windows have often been retrieved from deteriorated structures. Therefore, the windows and their frames are not always in the best condition.

We repair as many of the broken stained glass pieces as possible. Missing or damaged pieces are replaced with old glass or matching new glass. In the case of small cracks in difficult-to-reach places we either leave them alone or "lead over" the cracks to secure them.

Based on the extent of the damage, we sometimes resize or redesign the windows to utilize existing glass or to make the windows into more usable sizes or shapes.

House numbers are sometimes replaced by design elements when the style of the numbers is out of harmony with the 990805-000.jpg (13547 bytes) decorative aspects of the window. Whenever the numbers are leaded-in and are in good condition, we retain them as part of the window. We also have a small inventory of leaded glass house numbers that have been removed from windows that were redesigned.

There are several framing categories:

  1. Old Frame is retained AS IS, if viable. Usually these have several coats of old paint and are somewhat weathered.
  2. Stripped Old Frame is stripped down of old finish and left clean, but unfinished.
  3. Quality New Pine Frame is made in the old style and left unfinished, or sometimes custom finished.
  4. Zinc Border is added as a "self frame" without wood. Zinc is harder than the usual lead border and can have small metal hangers attached for hanging.  Zinc borders will support small to moderate sized windows (up to approx. 22" sq.) depending on the amount of lead {weight} in the window. Zinc bordered windows can be framed in wood at any time with the simple removal of the soldered hangers.  Zinc bordered panels are also easy to install in cabinet doors.
